The National Archives has a section on its website entitled Looking for a place? This has research signposts to the different types of records they hold that are by their nature specific to a place.

Brief outlines of each type of record are given, along with a search box pre-set to search just that record type. From the search results, you can click through to see more information about the record that includes your place. While the record itself is not yet, for the most part, available online, you can order a copy.
